Time to Fix Canada's Environmental Laws

Changes to the Fisheries Act and the Navigation Protection Act are expected within the next year according to the government’s own mandate letter tracker.

In 2012, millions of lakes and rivers lost protection from obstructions under the Navigation Protection Act while the Fisheries Act weakened safeguards for fish habitat. Now, we've got a once-in-a-generation chance to make sure the government gets these environmental laws right.

This summer and fall, Canadians nominated hundreds of unscheduled lakes and rivers for protection. In November, the Canadian Freshwater Alliance, along with environmental organizations from across the country, met with officials, senators and MPs about the government’s promise to review and modernize Canada’s environmental laws. You can read our summary of the meetings. More importantly, you can help ensure we get the strongest laws for Canada’s waters!
