The Canadian Freshwater Alliance is a project on Tides Canada’s shared platform. We aspire for the attainment of healthy waters across all of Canada and work to achieve this by building, connecting and supporting freshwater constituencies across the country. Since our inception in 2012, the Freshwater Alliance has established itself as the go-to initiative on strategies for effective freshwater engagement. Over this short time, we have built a network of 5300 freshwater supporters and followers, representing over 1,000 unique organizations spanning the country. Through direct involvement on critical freshwater issues and service delivery, we support the deepening of engagement for freshwater protection. We never work alone and pride ourselves on the work we do to engage and support Canada’s leading grassroots and community level initiatives.
We have an exciting opportunity in BC to drive a public narrative on freshwater health. The BC Organizer position will be tasked with implementing an ambitious campaign plan to amplify the voice of water across the province calling for robust action in our communities and across the province to protect the integrity of BCs precious water resources. As the campaign lead, the Organizer will work with the BC Communications Lead and other project partners to carry out priority campaign activities, including (but not limited to): media activities, action alerts, engagement strategy, and government relations. The Organizer will also be responsible for reporting on project learnings, deliverables and accomplishments.
Anticipated Start Date: Jan 14th, 2019
Location: Flexible within BC, preference for Vancouver or Victoria (work from home or hot-desk)
Salary: $45,000-50,000/year (based on 30 hr/week); 3 weeks vacation.
Key Responsibility Areas
Working alongside the Freshwater Alliance’s Director, the overall goal of the position is to oversee the implementation of engagement strategies for the Our Water BC program. This goal will be pursued by:
(i) implementing programmatic engagement activities;
(ii) supporting robust tracking of data to assess overall program successes;
(iii) leading organizing efforts in BC, including:
supporting alliances with a core group of organizations, associations and communities working collectively towards the goal;
advancing implementation of tools, strategies and techniques to identify and engage a supporter-base for the campaign; and
mobilizing local initiatives with respect to the campaign.
Key responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:
Oversee engagement program implementation and oversight for the Our Water BC project;
Track regularly campaign and programmatic successes and challenges;
Lead in the implementation of engagement strategy in British Columbia, including:
Oversee engagement strategy for advancing the defence of BCs waters;
Supporting campaign endorsers, and the BC freshwater community, with capacity needs to strengthen and support on the ground engagement activities;
Support the BC communications lead on communications efforts in British Columbia;
Represent the Alliance on appropriate committees, networks and collaborations in the province.
General Management and Administration
Day-to-day BC program operations and program delivery;
Provide regular activity reports to the Alliance Director.
Human Resources Management
Gain familiarity with Tides Canada human resources guidelines, policies and practices;
Regularly track hours, including recording time spent on fundraising and allowable non-partisan political activity;
- Report vacation and sick time to Alliance Director and to Tides Canada Human Resources.
The successful candidate will exhibit the following qualifications:
Be an experienced organizer with a track record of engaging Canadians on critical social, environmental or justice issues;
Have keen communication skills; able to advance messages across communities to mobilize support;
Be a strong networker; able to unite groups together towards a common purpose;
Have relevant educational, work and/or volunteer background (familiarity with database and contacts management systems is a major asset);
Exemplify self-motivation to go beyond the call of responsibility to achieve success in the position;
Demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to changing situations. Can respond to a changing big picture while remaining focused on the details of immediate tasks.
