In late 2020 and early 2021, people across the country sent thousands of letters to let the federal government know they wanted healthy watersheds to be a key part of our COVID-19 recovery plan. Dozens of letters to local newspapers around Canada were also sent.
Our movement asked for the federal government to invest in:
- A new Natural Infrastructure Fund to support creating, protecting and restoring trees, wetlands, rain gardens, and more that help purify water and reduce flooding;
- Ample funding to create a new Canada Water Agency in collaboration with Indigenous governments;
- A new Watershed security fund to support local watershed protection projects and organizations.
We were heard! Budget 2021 included funding commitments for two out of three of these asks: a Natural Infrastructure Fund and funding for a new Canada Water Agency.
Well hey, in the words of a great rock and roller, two out of three ain't bad. We were also very happy to see historic investments in infrastructure in Indigenous communities across Canada, some of which will be earmarked for water and wastewater infrastructure to end drinking water advisories in First Nations.
Our work is not over, but for now we can celebrate our wins, and refocus on what's next. If you want to stay in the loop with our federal policy advocacy work, sign up above.
Thank you for being part of this incredible movement!
