CFA: What are some of your favourite local spots on Lake Erie?
MM: My top 3 favourite spots on Lake Erie are Colchester Beach, the boardwalk in the marsh at Point Pelee and the beautiful sandy beaches on Pelee Island.
CFA: What are your reasons for participating in the Lake Erie Challenge this year?
MM: As a boater, open water swimmer and paddler, I enjoy the opportunities our lakes provide for recreation and have a desire to raise awareness about the threats to our great natural resources including algal blooms, invasive species and pollution - such as plastics and untreated sewage.
CFA: How have you been training this year, with the restrictions put in place by COVID-19 with pools being closed and restricted water access? Do you work in any other sports or workout routines other than swimming?
MM: Since COVID, I have been swimming more than ever in Lake Ontario. I’ve also been taking my stand up paddleboard out pretty often. In addition to staying active on and in the water, I also like to cycle on the rail trails around Caledon and Brantford.
CFA: What are some of your accomplishments in your swimming career?
MM: I have participated in many open water swims in the Global Swim Series, Swoos and Barbados open water swim festival. I have also done fundraisers like Swim for the Cure, Kingston Swim for Kids and the Northshore Challenge for camp trillium. My favourite distance is 5k.
