We 💙 Our Watersheds: a community letter exchange

Join us for a community letter exchange and connect with other freshwater champions across the country.

We’re reaching out this February because we’re tired and we know you are too.

Tired of being cooped up, tired of being kept away from our loved ones, and tired of being cold.

It’s coming up on a year of lockdown, and sometimes it feels like there isn’t a clear end in sight.

We’d like to help bring a spark of warmth and connection back to you -- because while we’ve been kept apart, we’re still united by our love of defending and preserving our local watersheds.

That’s why we’re launching this letter exchange: a chance to connect with people of different backgrounds and experiences to share your thoughts, stories and memories about your community and watershed.

Whether you're five years old (or, more likely, you're the parent of a 5-year old), or 97; in St. John's, Iqaluit, Hamilton or somewhere in between: this exchange is for everyone! Because, hey, couldn't we all use a little more connection and something to look forward to right now?

Here are the steps:

1. Sign up and get matched
Sign up for the exchange.

Every Friday, we’ll send out an email to all the folks who have signed up during the week with news about their match.

Registration closes on the morning of March 15th.

2. Write a letter, find the perfect gift, and send
You’ll get a few lines about your match to help you decide what to send them. You have until March 22nd (this is also World Water Day!) to mail your letter.

3. Receive a letter from your match
When you receive your letter, please share the happy news with us! You can do that by emailing us or tagging us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram!

That’s it! Have any questions? Check out our FAQ (below) or email us.

FAQ

When does the exchange happen?
Matching is ongoing as you register. The final deadline to send your letter is March 22nd.

What am I supposed to send?
A letter, artwork, or a small gift (optional), such as stickers, tea, seeds, a drawing, a photo or chocolate (mmm). Your letter can be as long or as short as you like. Postcards are great too!

If you’re stumped on what to write, remember, there’s one thing we all have in common here: a love for defending and preserving our local watersheds.

I’d like to add a gift. How much should I spend?
$5 max, plus any postage fees.

What information do you share?
We will share your first name, shipping address and the information you give about yourself with your match.

What if I didn’t receive anything?
Please contact us if you do not receive a letter and we’ll do our best to match you with someone new!

What if I don’t like my letter?
We want everyone to love the letter they received, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. Sometimes, just like with people you know personally, the writer misses the mark.

If you received something that makes you uncomfortable, please email us.

Although we're facilitating this exchange, we can't be responsible for what you receive. You may receive a letter you don't like, or no letter at all. Please join at your own risk. The Canadian Freshwater Alliance is not responsible for any items sent, received, or lost in motion.
